Howard Weinberg

Howard Weinberg received his undergraduate degree from Sussex in the UK and both Masters and Doctorate in Environmental Science and Engineering at the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology with a specialty in water and wastewater treatment.

He has directed more than 35 funded research projects while at UNC in fields related to drinking water quality, alternative disinfection technologies and their byproducts, wastewater reclamation for small communities, use of wastewater in sustainable agriculture and environmental justice. Dr. Weinberg was promoted to Full Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, located in the Gillings School of Public Health, in 2017 and engages students at all levels of their education on interdisciplinary projects across the spectrum of science, policy, public health and community engagement.

With over 60 peer reviewed publications and over 150 public meeting presentations with his students, Dr. Weinberg is committed to sharing his knowledge and experience at home and abroad as demonstrated by his adjunct appointments at Duke University and the University of Queensland in Australia. Most recently his team has successfully brought together industry, community, and state regulators to begin a process of mediating a long-standing conflict related to environmental contamination in North Carolina
