Elliot M Silverstein

Currently, Dr. Silverstein is also an adjunct professor at the UNC School of Law. After graduating from UNC, Dr. Silverstein worked on the Adolescent Unit at Dorothea Dix Hospital, eventually becoming the Director of Psychological Services for the hospital and became more involved with hospital administration. After the merger of Central Regional Hospital in Butner, NC, and Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh, Dr. Silverstein remained on the Raleigh campus in a teaching, clinical and supervisory role. He has been active in lecturing and teaching at UNC Medical School, including a yearly seminar on the Rorschach Ink Blot Test for psychology students as well as risk management lectures for the psychology interns and psychiatric residents.

In 1994, 2007, and again in 2012, Dr. Silverstein received the Herman Lineberger Award for Excellence in Supervision from the Department of Psychiatry in UNC Medical School. Since 2000, Dr. Silverstein has been a Co-Chair for the Professional Affairs and Ethics Committee of the North Carolina Psychological Association (NCPA) and serves on NCPA’s Board of Directors. As part of his duties as Co-Chair of the NCPA Ethics Committee, he routinely assists psychologists who are dealing with difficult clinical, legal and ethical dilemmas. He has designed and given numerous workshops and presentations on Ethics and Risk Management, including a biennial ethics workshop at Duke University Medical Center.

Dr. Silverstein teaches two courses at the UNC School of Law, Interviewing and Counseling in the fall semester, and Negotiation in the spring semester. Dr. Silverstein has taught frequently in the Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC, has conducted various Executive Education Programs for business executives at UNC, and provided consulting services for various corporations and legal departments. In addition, Dr. Silverstein has conducted various seminars and workshops for the UNC School of Public Health in a number of its Management Academies. Since 1986, Dr. Silverstein has maintained an active part-time counseling and psychotherapy practice working with a variety of people and has extensive experience working with professionals and executives.
